The nine—tailed fox is a fox—based yokai that has lived for over a thousand years and possesses strong magical powers. Foxes that mysteriously obtain magical powers become yokai, and the longer the fox has lived the stronger its powers become, with the number of tails it possesses increasing accordingly as well. Fox spirits with one tail have only weak magical powers and are as intelligent as the average human, but those that live a thousand years eventually grow nine tails, and are believed to have a level of intelligence that far exceeds that of even the most intelligent of humans.
The most famous and well—known nine—tailed fox in history is perhaps Tamamo no Mae, who disguised herself as a lady of the court in an attempt to sow seeds of political discord during the Heian period. However, once an Onmyo mage revealed her true form, she was driven out of the capital and into the Nasu mountains of Shimotsuke province (present—day Tochigi prefecture), where she transformed herself into a stone. Those that ventured too close to the stone fell victim to the poisonous air around it, earning it the name the "Killing Stone."
Many theories abound of fox spirits other than Tamamo no Mae taking the form of a beautiful woman to lay waste to certain ancient provinces. There are also a number of ancient texts suggesting that in addition to fox spirits that sought to tempt the hearts of men to invoke conflict, there also existed benevolent spirits that aimed to bring peace to the world. It might be appropriate to assume that like with many things in life, there are two sides to a fox spirit, one violent and one peaceful.
